What we hold,
and for how long.

NIS collects personal data from people inside mainland China, which places it under the Personal Information Protection Law. This page says plainly what that means in practice.

What this site collects on its own

It collects nothing. There is no analytics script, no advertising network, no social embed and no third-party font or map. Browsing this site does not create a record anywhere that identifies you.

The arrival checklist remembers which steps you have ticked. That is stored in your own browser and is never sent to us or to anyone else. Clearing your browser data removes it.

What the two forms collect

The membership form and the visitor log are the only places this site asks for anything. Each one states, on the form itself, why it is asking, how long the answers are kept and who sees them. You have to tick a box before anything is submitted, because consent is never assumed from the act of typing.

  • Membership records are kept while you are a member and for twelve months after.
  • Visitor log records are kept for twenty-four months from the date of the visit.

Both are deleted automatically at the end of that period. Deletion is enforced by the storage itself rather than by someone remembering to do it.

What we never ask for

Passport numbers, visa numbers, residence permit numbers, national identification numbers or any other identity document detail. Nothing NIS does requires them, and the forms reject them if they are ever added.

If you receive a form claiming to be from NIS that asks for a passport number, it did not come from us, and we would like to hear about it.

Who has access

The elected executive committee. Data is never sold, published or shared with advertisers, and no third party is given a copy. Where a member is asked to help a specific visitor, they are given only what is needed for that, and only with the visitor's knowledge.

Your rights

Under PIPL you can ask us to:

  • tell you what we hold about you
  • correct anything that is wrong
  • delete your record entirely
  • withdraw the consent you gave, at any time

Write to hello@nigeriansinshenzhen.org. You do not have to give a reason, and asking will not affect your membership.

Where the data sits

This site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages and form submissions are stored in Cloudflare's key-value storage. That means the records may be held outside mainland China.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that affects what we do with data already collected, we will say so on the news page rather than quietly editing this one.
